Built for Defence
Newfoundland and Labrador sits at the intersection of Arctic, Atlantic, and North American defence domains.
Strategic Overview
Ready to Support Canada's New Defence Industrial Strategy
Newfoundland and Labrador has the defence industrial capacity, infrastructure, workforce and strategic proximity to advance Canada’s national sovereignty and security.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have served in defence of our province and country. Many have given their lives in that service, and others continue to serve in protection of our national sovereignty. This service is especially important today given the ever-changing global security considerations.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador continues to engage with provincial partners to inform the development of a collective provincial approach to defence that is strategic, comprehensive, and complementary to Canada’s national priorities. Partner input is critical to ensuring Newfoundland and Labrador’s strengths, opportunities, and priorities are reflected in this work.
As Canada implements its Defence Industrial Strategy, Newfoundland and Labrador believes Arctic sovereignty is strengthened when defence investments create lasting benefits for both national security and northern communities. Investments in ports, airfields, communications, energy systems, and transportation should be designed as dual-use infrastructure, supporting military operations while improving economic opportunity, public services, and quality of life. By aligning defence capability with community resilience and regional development, Canada can build a stronger, more enduring northern presence that advances both sovereignty and prosperity.
